SPy - the kick ass game from JRG games,
Bigboned UK and Andrew Rumney.
The idea for SPy was orginally devised by Jon Robson of JRG games. JRG games saw a shortage of good games in the shoot em up section of south park gaming.
Work went underway incorporating various ideas JRG games had come across making click games. Features such as multiple weapons selectable by numbers on a keypad, the idea of stealth, better than average Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and huge levels with missions were many of the ideas that JRG games wanted to incorporate in the game.
Scott Ewart, maker of Halloween 99, saw an early engine of the game and wanted in. Believing that Scott Ewart would help make SPy even better JRG games beckoned him into the project. At first Scott made many top down levels using the engine and provided various graphics for the game. However, since Scott had only entered the project about 1/4 of the way through production he didn't have much influence on the game as most of it including the engine he wasn't able to help as much as would have been liked.
It was near the end of SPy 2 that Scott Ewart started to make levels at his best level ever as shown by the FINALE level of SPy 1 - the only boss level he did in SPy. His boss levels were amazing.
The success of SPy 1 was incredible and the game was well received by a huge audience. However Scott and Jon believed they were capable of much more. They learnt from their mistakes and set out to make SPy 2.
This time they made sure they perfected the engine before carrying on with making the game. The engine took almost 3 months to make. Both contributed equally and Scott made sure this time there were good graphics for this game to make it even better. Then came the time where the engine looked finished and both parties were happy with it.
Jon Robson straight away got to work on levels for SPy 2 while Scott Ewart tried to perfect his boss engine and make memorable boss levels that were both fun to play and stunning to look at.
Delay after delay came as both Scott and Jon worked hard to perfect their game with help from various testers to make sure there were no bugs, fun levels and only the best gameplay.
SPy 2 is now in the last stages of development and should be here Summer 2001.
