TIME SPLITTERS REVIEW
PS2 INDEX
Timesplitters is arcade shooting at it's best and in my
opinion is yet to be rivaled in the shooting game department on the PS2.
The game is simple addictive arcade action. There is a story mode, arcade mode and
challenge mode. The "story" mode (which to be honest is a bit misleading since
there are no cutscenes or attempts to tell the story) is very Goldeneye like, running
around a gorgeous looking level firing at a vast array of enemies from zombies to aliens
to secret agents over various time settings. The ultimate goal on the story mode is to
collect a certain object and return it to base. Very simple but addictive and challenging.
The guns in this game are amazingly good fun to use with miniguns, shotguns, and my
favourites the M16 and double Uzis!
Although a very simple game there is so much to do. There are plenty of entertaining
levels with three difficulty settings and you get awarded various levels, bots, cheats
depending on how well you do in them. The challenge mode adds a new dimension to the
gameplay with the chance to complete challenges such as "shoot the heads off 50
zombies with a shotgun in two minutes". The challenges, levels and difficulty
settings will ensure that you have hours of enjoyment.
However it is multiplayer that really shines - a mad frenzied range of games for 1-4
players. Free Radical, the makers of the game have perfected this multiplayer bringing one
of the greatest multiplayer games on the PS2 - a multiplayer truly worth buying a multitap
for (if you have that many friends of course - you may lose some submerged in the levels!
:)). The range of games you can play on multiplayer from "Capture the Bag" to
"Escort" and to the classic deathmatch will have you beating your friends to a
bloody pulp day after day, and even if you haven't got friends you can enjoy playing a
wide range of bots.
It's no suprise that Timesplitters is one hell of a game as several of the Goldeneye team
themselves were involved heavily in this game and their influence has really rubbed off on
the game. This game will give you hours of enjoyment. There is even an easy to use map
maker when you get bored of all the maps you are provided with. A wide range of maps can
be made with several floors, various types of room sizes and layouts and you can even
place the items such as weapons and health exactly where you want them! If you were a
Playstation owner without an N64 and felt sad everytime you remembered your friend playing
Goldeneye day in and day out it is time for revenge. Timesplitters is without a doubt the
Goldeneye of the PS2.
